What Have We Learned?

This week the psu ag ed cohort had the opportunity to teach our own formative assessment. This is a way to gauge if your students are understanding the material that was taught during the lesson, or if you need to revisit it. I chose to do a lesson on dairy cattle housing.

The formative assessment I created for this lesson, had students drawing a dairy barn with the key aspects labeled. An example would be students including ventilation and drainage systems. On the left is an actual drawing one of my "students" did for the class. Overall this was a fun activity for students to get a chance to show what they know in a creative way. However, this lab was also a learning curve for me. I realized I have to be more specific on what I expect from my students. It also might be helpful to give my students more examples of what a dairy barn looks like. I am really looking forward to seeing how I can improve my formative assessments this semester to make them more effective for my students during student teaching and beyond.
Thats all for this weeks story with Ms. Sweeten, stay tuned for next week!

Anna,
I may be a little biased, but I really enjoyed this lesson! Thank you for including my barn in your blog! I really enjoy getting to show my creative side and love for cows in lab!
Way to go this week!

Anna,
A short and simple read this week but a great read at that! I really liked this activity. I would love to see this taught in a "real" classroom and see how you expand upon it!!
Anna, I had so much fun sketching out my own dairy barn in your lab. I think with a few small tweaks this will be an awesome formative assessment that not only students will enjoy, but you will also be able to get great feedback from their drawings as far as what they understand about dairy facilities!
