Shhh! We are Playing Charades

This week we were tasked with creating an interest approach for one of our classes in the spring. We then had to present this lesson to our lab group as if they were our students to see how it might go in the classroom. For my interest approach I chose to do a quick game of charades for a lesson that I will be teaching on nonverbal communication, and let me tell you it was a blast!

I thought that charades would be a great way to get students thinking about the topic that we would be discussing in class by realizing how much we can communicate without using words. As a future educator I know that interest approaches help create interest in what is about to be taught in the lesson. Once students are interested in a topic or start thinking about it they are more likely to be engaged and retain the information they are learning. I can use what I learned this week as an agriscience teacher because I can include interest approaches in my lessons in creative new ways.

I learned a lot this week as well. I learned that interest approaches do not have to take up a huge chunk of your lesson. It is possible to have an effective interest approach in a shorter amount of time. A few of my cohort members did a great job at showing this. I cannot wait to learn more from them.

I hope you enjoyed this weeks story with Ms. Sweeten!

Anna, great conclusions from lab this week. I agree, it was nice to learn that we do not have to spend a lot of time conducting an interest approach for when time is limited, we can get a quick interest approach in and jump right into content.

Anna,

I thought this was a neat activity to get ALL of your students engaged. I am sure that many of your students have heard of non verbal communication before but I think this was a fun spin on diving back into this content area. Great Job!!!

Anna, while I wasn't in your lab I would've loved to have been able to participate in your interest approach! From the video, everyone looked like they had a great time (which is important) and that this would be a very meaningful experience to your students. I believe you had some good takeaways for this week. Good job! -Carly

Anna,

I really enjoyed you interest approach in lab this week! Way to tie in your content and show kids why communication is so important. I hope I can use this in my public speaking unit!
